US author Tayari Jones received huge critical acclaim for An American Marriage which was the deserving winner of The Women’s Prize for Fiction 2019. Her work has been championed by Barack Obama and Oprah Winfrey and provides an exhilarating fusion of James Baldwin and Anne Tyler.

We are delighted to welcome her to Cambridge to discuss Silver Sparrow which opens with the startling line ‘My Father, James Witherspoon, is a bigamist’. What follows is the complicated story of two daughters, two mothers and two families all set in a middle-class neighbourhood in Atlanta in the 1980s.

Tayari Jones is the internationally bestselling author of four novels. The most recent of which An American Marriage, was selected for the Oprah Book Club. It went on to win the 2019 Aspen Words Literary Prize, the NAACP image Award for Outstanding Work and the Women’s Prize for Fiction. Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she is currently Professor of Creative Writing at Emory University.

In conversation with Jo Browning Wroe, writer and teacher.
